Seems like "Uptown Updater" got so excited about a critique of Alderman Helen Shiller, he/she linked to a Free Republic article written by a racist, anti-gay lunatic by the name of Rosanna Pulido who previously ran for Congress. She was denounced by Tom Mannis of Chicago News Bench which is teabagger/Freeper heaven, so you can use that as a measure of how extreme and marginal she is. After some of the local would-be burghers protested linking to a reactionary source and a couple of the usual suspects defended it, the post vanished. I took a screencap and posted it to a thread on the Chicago Reader in response to the individual (James Cappleman?) stalking me over there under the name "Mother of FGFM." Shortly thereafter, a mea culpa appeared on Uptown Update.

"UU would like to issue a sincere apology to anyone who may have been offended by a recent post which has since been removed from the blogroll. We knew nothing about the group that was mentioned and regret linking to their publication."

Bullshit. For starters, the post was titled "Chicago City Council Mexican Hootenanny: AFTER ACTION REPORT." Without even reading the objectionable article, shouldn't that "Mexican Hootenanny" line be a tip-off?

The reactionary lunatics at Uptown Update have been going after the poor slobs who peddle out of suitcases and shopping carts at the corner of Wilson and Broadway. Of course, anyone who dares to defend them from the wrath of the indignant condo owners has a fight on his hands! You can review the class warfare projection at James Cappleman's favorite web site yourself, but noted goldbricker "Yo" has provides a memorable quote:

See, it's not actually working on the job that counts - it's a matter of working hard enough to con someone into giving you the job in the first place! But being the sort of lazy deadbeat who tries to augment his disability check by hustling tube socks will not be tolerated as it obviously shows dependence on Helen Shiller according to "holy moley."

This is how we keep the peddlers trapped in poverty and dependent on Helen Shiller: ignore the laws that don't allow peddlers to park on the sidewalk, encourage peddling at the epicenter of drug trafficking on the Northside, and accuse anyone who speaks up to hate poor people. That's right out of the Shiller School of Politics 101.

It's a win-win. Helen encourages dependency on her and best of all, the peddlers are lulled into believing that someone is advocating for them.

Crusader wants to be a crusader but he's not. It's all delusional and it's more than obvious. Kenny, you, like Helen, want to promote a class war. It's not working anymore.

Now, some of you stalkers might have figured out that I actually moved out of Uptown years ago after my sterling career at Truman College - the Uptown Barber Shop being a metaphysical establishment. That being the case, I've been participating in the discussions at the South Loop blog Sloopin, the Sloop (South Loop) being the latest tragic attempt (see SuHu) to ape New Yorkers who like to pin acronyms like SoHo, NoHo, DUMBO, etc., on their marginal neighborhoods.

While the guy who runs it is kind of stupid and doesn't seem to have a lot of actual knowledge about the area (he wasn't sure if the Lexington Hotel at Cermak (or as he typically spells it, "Cermack") and Michigan was torn down, for example - 1995, genius!), he did offer a forum and I largely ignored the gushy and boosterish nature of his posts.

Unfortunately. there's a fellow or two over there who like to obsessively post about "animals" who live in housing projects, slaughter people with abandon while nice people are trying to eat at Gioco, eat chicken wings in the Jewel parking lot, and transfer to the #12 bus. I don't think that you have to be a French literary deconstructionist to figure out what the guy is trying to say and I (occasionally along with a couple of others) would call out this sort of rhetoric on a regular basis.

It had gotten to the point where this racist anon was repeatedly calling me out and trying to twist everything I said into being some sort of attack on Western Civilization along with me being a member of the Black Panthers, ACORN, and probably a member of the Third Internationale. After an extended exchange over the merits of the Custom House Tavern, a failing upscale restaurant at Congress and Dearborn, "Sloopy" decided to enforce comments moderation.

I actually was happy to see this because I thought that it might tone down the racial rhetoric on the forum. However, the next day, the usual suspect was posting the usual material and calling me out by name even though I hadn't posted anything.

I send a pointed message to "Sloopy" and asked if he felt that this sort of thing added to the discussion and if I would be allowed to rebut it. I received a tentative response that I didn't particularly appreciate and this led into a rather heated discussion in a couple of different media.

Well, it's his circus and stupid is as stupid does, so I'll leave him to his quest for exciting Groupon offers and rumors of upscale supermarket construction. However, it was amusing to see who he uses as a model!

Of course, that isn't actually the case since Uptown Update doesn't allow anonymous comments and quite frankly, the UU people are a little more responsible when it comes to the racial stuff. And to cap it all off, "Sloopy" weighed in at UU on the perils of 7-11 selling private label beer!

Well played. And of course, I can see why he wants to emulate Uptown Update given its noted civility.

I previous mentioned that Alderman of the Internet, James Cappleman, was apparently attacking me on the Chicago Tribune website using the email uptownnabor@yahoo.com. The profile from this ID previously had the name "James" on it, but now features an asterisk. Cappleman previously held the domain uptownneighbors.org which he allowed to expire after he put some crap about James Q. Wilson on it, so there appears to be a connection.

Now, I was commenting on this story about the Lawrence House and noticed that my two previous comments had been deleted. When I attempted to log in, the bug I mentioned previously that displays the email of the previous commenter happened again!

Interestingly enough, the profile for jjcappleman@yahoo.com also features an asterisk. Think that's just a coincidence?

Of course, calling people "hippie assholes" is the height of civility. And upthread, administalker "Caring Neighbor" attacks a dissident who made a sarastic comment in defense of Ald. Helen Shiller.

"Caring," of course, never complains about "yo" posting and tweeting reactionary bullshit all day even though he complained about his Social Security deductions from his paycheck kicking back in at the start of the year. And of course, he couched it in such a way that an unsophisticated reader might think that this was some sort of new tax that was imposed instead of something kicking back in at the start of the year since he apparently went over the $106,800 threshold. The amount he mentioned would suggest that he makes about 125K while walking around the neighborhood taking pictures of graffiti.

Even funnier, it appears that James Cappleman himself was harassing me on the Chicago Tribune message boards. There's a little bug in the forum software where you might get the email of a previous poster in the login field. One morning, I see this email uptownnabor@yahoo.com. When I look at the profile for the email apparently associated with the Uptown_Girl ID at the Tribune, it comes up with the name "James." And it just so happens there was a web domain uptownneighbors.org registered to one James Cappleman of the 4600th black of North Magnolia, go figure.

I believe real reform is down the road, perhaps sooner than we think. Now that I take the train to work, I have time for more reading. In "Freakonmics", the authors discuss the role of blogging and bringing to light the corruption that exists.

The book gives a marvelous quote from Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, who said "Sunlight is said to be the best disinfectant."
